Sources & credits
jengmap is a solo, student-led project. It is not an official CUHK map and is not affiliated with or endorsed by CUHK, the Hong Kong Government or the services credited here.
Map data
- Most building footprints, campus features, lakes and ponds, sports grounds, paths and station exits: © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. The OSM-derived database is available under ODbL; see the downloadable files below.
- Terrain and the 3D Pedestrian Network: © HKSAR Government, Lands Department, supplied through DATA.GOV.HK and CSDI. Reuse is subject to the DATA.GOV.HK Terms and Conditions and the source's applicable terms. Elevations and access attributes are derived from these datasets.
- Building outlines that OpenStreetMap does not yet map separately (Mona Shaw Hall; Kuo Mou Hall High and Low Blocks, Fu Zung Centre and their podium): © HKSAR Government, Lands Department Building dataset, supplied through DATA.GOV.HK and CSDI, under the DATA.GOV.HK Terms and Conditions. These outlines are map geometry only; they do not mark entrances or public access.
- Shuttle timetables and service notices: © CUHK Transport Office. Building names and map numbers: © The Chinese University of Hong Kong. College colours reference the nine colleges' official websites. These sources retain their respective rights; credit does not grant permission to reuse their photographs, page designs or logos.
- Public bus and minibus stop facts: Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited and Long Win Bus Company Limited, and Transport Department green minibus data, via DATA.GOV.HK and the providers' open APIs. Holiday calendar: HKSAR Government / 1823.
Our processed map databases can be downloaded as building footprints, walking graph, place index, lakes and ponds, sports grounds and shuttles. Original source rights and ODbL obligations still apply. These files describe mapped conditions, not verified opening hours or guaranteed access.
Classroom codes and explicitly stated floors: © CUHK Audio Visual Services Unit, Registry. The public communal-classroom directory is a partial campus room catalogue. Room details link to the official source; photographs and floor-plan artwork are not reproduced.
Water dispensers, toilets and printing: © CUHK Campus Map and CUHK Library, including its printing directory. Download the attributed amenity facts. Coverage is partial; listings do not establish current availability, public access or a step-free approach. No indoor positions or floor-plan artwork are reproduced.
KMB Fare Saver kiosks (九巴大專優惠站): © The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd., Fare Saver kiosk list. Walk for Green card readers: © CUHK Sustainability Office (SRSDO), Walk for Green and its official map. Each is shown at its named building; machine status is not live. Download the attributed service points and Walk for Green readers, points and routes.
Food, shops and shared student rooms: © CUHK Living on Campus and Office of Student Affairs, Benjamin Franklin Centre amenities. Download the attributed venue facts. This partial catalogue uses existing building destinations, not indoor coordinates or verified doors. Society office allocations remain unverified.
Study spaces, access rules and dated opening schedules: © CUHK Library, its opening calendar, and the CUHK campus directory. Download the attributed place details. Each fact retains its source and review date. Scheduled hours are not live availability; membership, booking, term and cleaning restrictions still apply. Official floor plans and walking posters are linked as references without copying their artwork.
Location photographs
Additional official names, abbreviations and landmark aliases come from the CUHK map directory, Graduate School building abbreviations and New Asia College. Physical Education Unit: Sir Philip Haddon-Cave Sports Field confirms the official name. Its map pin is a published location, not a verified entrance or approach route.
Selected student nicknames are attributed to the student-authored CU Pedia dictionary, CUHK Taiwanese Student Association's library guide and canteen guide, and the 2020 Journalism orientation glossary. These are search aids, not official names or proof of current usage. Only attributed name facts are used; articles and artwork are not republished. Per-alias sources are included in the downloadable place and venue indexes.
One reusable image loads from Wikimedia automatically when you select a place. Tap the thumbnail to enlarge it; source-only images remain links. Images may be unavailable offline. They show dated appearance, not confirmation of the selected entrance, current access, or arrival. Photo metadata and source links are in photo and route references.
Every preview displays its file title, photographer, source page, date precision and applicable licence. The catalogue includes CC BY 3.0, CC BY 4.0, CC BY-SA 3.0, CC BY-SA 4.0, and author-released public-domain works whose file licensing statements are linked individually. Images are displayed without editing.
Additional photographs associated by the official CUHK map and Campus Development Office galleries remain on CUHK's site. Their reuse permission is unconfirmed, so the app provides source links.
Software
three.js renders the map. Workbox and idb support offline use. qrcode-generator draws the QR codes on shared Info Day plans. Their complete copyright and licence texts, with installed versions, are included in third-party software notices.
The project is built with Vite, TypeScript, Vite PWA and Python; tested with Vitest and Playwright. Their licences apply to their respective software. No open-source licence for this application's original code is implied by these credits.
Design & research references
The jengmap logo is original GPT Image-generated artwork combining 正, a walking trail and a hillside. Its small pool and trees take inspiration from the Pavilion of Harmony described by New Asia College. It is a decorative independent-project identity, not CUHK's emblem or an arrival photograph.
The 夾時間 mark on the map's 夾時間 button belongs to 夾時間, a new jengmap feature. It is copied unchanged from that project; its 夾 is lettered in Hannotate TC Bold.
Apple Maps (Apple Inc.) informed 3D map readability; Citymapper informed transit information; Monument Valley (ustwo games) informed the calm low-poly art direction. Esri World Imagery and its imagery providers were used for visual comparison. We also reviewed CUHK Map, a 2024 student project.
Reference screenshots and third-party map tiles are not shipped as this app's map. Product names and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Our geometry comes from the credited geographic datasets.
